Al-Kindî (Ensemble)
French Syrian Julien Jâlal Eddine Weiss, who plays the qânûn or Arab zither, established the Al Kindî Ensemble back in 1983, and has not looked back since. The Oriental formation based in Aleppo, Syria, is now regarded as among the best interpreters of classical and devotional Arab music in the world. Weiss regularly invites top vocalists from the Arab world to front his ensemble, and his 2003 CD highlighted the mystical vocal qualities of Sheikh Habboush.
Al Kindi's groundbreaking tour of the United States in November 2004 featured the Whirling Dervishes of Damascus and the charismatic figure of Sheikh Hamza Shakkûr. Shortly after the election of George W. Bush to office for a second term, Al Kindi presented a humanist and enlightened expression of Sufi Islam that runs counter to the aggressive stereotypes the Bush administration has promoted since 2001.

Théâtre de la Ville, December 2002

In December 2002, the Théatre de la Ville in central Paris programmed Al Kindi and Sheikh Habbouh to mark the end of the ramadan. The spiritual and mystical elevations inspired by Weiss and Habboush were appropriate notes to mark the end of this holy month for Moslems around the world.
